Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has published a deeply personal and emotional letter accusing Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital of negligence, lack of transparency and attempts to obstruct efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of her four-year-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
In the letter, addressed to the hospital's board chairman and later made public, Adichie detailed the devastating loss of her son following what she alleges was an improperly administered sedation procedure during an MRI scan in January. She claims hospital officials initially acknowledged errors made by the anaesthesiologist, only for the institution's position to later change.
The writer alleges that medical staff informed her that her son had been given "too much propofol," leading to respiratory and cardiac arrest, hypoxic brain injury and, ultimately, his death. She further claims that Euracare later listed meningitis as the cause of death on official documents despite what she describes as a lack of evidence supporting that conclusion.
The letter outlines a series of grievances, including delayed access to medical records, incomplete documentation, alleged attempts to shift responsibility, and what Adichie describes as efforts to frustrate the coroner's inquest into her son's death. She also criticises the hospital's decision to seek legal intervention to halt the inquest, arguing that the process is intended solely to establish the facts surrounding a death.
"I wake up every single morning with my heart racing. Did this really happen?" Adichie wrote. "The ultimate and utter loneliness of grief is that only you can know the true depth of your despair."
The author said she decided to make the letter public because remaining silent would, in her view, enable wrongdoing. She described Euracare's actions as "callous" and accused the institution of prioritising reputation management over accountability.
In a statement accompanying the publication of the letter, Adichie said her family's pursuit of justice would continue despite what she characterised as delays, intimidation and attempts to derail the search for truth.
The case remains the subject of ongoing legal and judicial proceedings, with the circumstances surrounding the child's death yet to be formally determined by the courts and the inquest process.
