CHLOE MALLE NAMED HEAD OF AMERICAN VOGUE, SUCCEEDING ANNA WINTOUR.

For nearly four decades, the name Vogue has been synonymous with one woman: Anna Wintour. Since 1988, Wintour has reigned over American Vogue with her signature bob, sunglasses, and an unshakable influence that stretched far beyond fashion.

From shaping runway trends to redefining the cultural role of magazines, she became the heartbeat of the global fashion conversation.

Now, history is turning a new page.

Chloe Malle, 39, has officially been appointed Head of Editorial Content at American Vogue, succeeding Wintour in one of the most prestigious and closely-watched roles in fashion media.

Malle is not a newcomer to the world of culture and publishing. The daughter of actress Candice Bergen and French filmmaker Louis Malle, she has built her own editorial path over the years. A longtime Vogue contributor and former Vogue.com editor, Malle has earned a reputation for her sharp writing, keen cultural insights, and ability to bridge traditional print sensibilities with digital-first storytelling.

Contrary to speculation, Anna Wintour isn’t leaving the stage entirely. She will continue in her role as Condé Nast’s Global Chief Content Officer and Vogue’s Global Editorial Director, maintaining oversight of the brand worldwide, including international editions and cultural flagships like the Met Gala.

Her influence remains undeniable, but the day-to-day creative direction of American Vogue now rests with Malle.

This transition represents more than a change of leadership—it signals a generational shift.

Malle steps into the role at a time when fashion media faces pressing questions:

  • How can print remain relevant in a digital-dominated world?

  • What does diversity and representation look like in the next era of Vogue?

  • How can a legacy brand adapt without losing its identity?

With Malle’s appointment, Vogue seems to be signaling a desire for continuity with Wintour’s vision, while also opening the door to fresh perspectives shaped by a younger, digitally fluent editor.

The fashion industry will be watching closely. Will Chloe Malle’s Vogue lean into bolder storytelling, championing emerging voices and new aesthetics? Or will it preserve the glossy traditions of Wintour’s reign?

One thing is certain: with this transition, American Vogue enters a new chapter. And just as Anna Wintour defined an era, Chloe Malle now has the chance to define the next.
