The legendary actor says he has been living with Alzheimer's disease since 2022, choosing honesty over silence in a bid to challenge stigma and remind others that a diagnosis does not diminish a life well lived.

Iconic actor and activist Danny Glover has publicly revealed that he is living with Alzheimer's disease, transforming a deeply personal health battle into a powerful conversation about dignity, legacy, and aging.
In a moving interview with Lester Holt, the 79-year-old Lethal Weapon and The Color Purple star shared that he has been quietly living with the progressive neurodegenerative disease since 2022. He received the diagnosis shortly after being honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award.
For a man who has spent decades commanding the screen and championing social justice, speaking publicly about cognitive decline is a remarkable act of vulnerability. Glover acknowledged that while the disease has affected his speech, memory, and movement, he refuses to allow it to define the life he continues to live.
"I could live with it, in a sense," Glover said. "I'm sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing. Your life continues."
By sharing his diagnosis now, Glover and his family hope to dismantle the stigma that still surrounds dementia and Alzheimer's disease, choosing openness over silence and ensuring that he remains the author of his own story.
That commitment is shared by those closest to him. His daughter, Mandisa Glover, spoke about the importance of allowing her father to tell his story on his own terms.
"I think it's really important for him to have control of his own narrative, of his own life story," she said, explaining that the family wanted to be transparent rather than leave the public wondering about any noticeable changes.
Despite the challenges of the disease, Glover remains an active presence in his native San Francisco, continuing to attend grassroots social justice events, engage with fans, and participate in his community. He is also using his platform to encourage habits supported by the Alzheimer's Association, including prioritising quality sleep, protecting cardiovascular health, staying physically active, and maintaining meaningful social connections.
By stepping into the spotlight with honesty, grace, and optimism, Danny Glover offers a powerful reminder that while Alzheimer's disease may change the mind, it does not erase a person's purpose, humanity, or spirit.
