Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Found Dead Aged 41

Professor Jason Arday, the British-Ghanaian academic who made history as the youngest Black professor appointed at the University of Cambridge, has died aged 41.

Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon. Emergency services were called shortly after 3pm, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said his death is being treated as unexpected but is not believed to be suspicious. His family has been informed and a file will be prepared for the coroner. No cause of death has yet been announced.

News of his death comes just over a week after Arday resigned from his position as Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge and from his fellowship at Jesus College. His resignation followed intense public scrutiny and allegations concerning plagiarism, his academic credentials and parts of his personal story.

Arday denied being a liar or fantasist, although he acknowledged that some mistakes had been made. In his resignation statement, he said the months of accusations and public commentary had taken a serious toll on him and his family. He explained that he was stepping away to “reclaim some peace” and allow himself time to heal.

Born in London to Ghanaian parents, Arday rose to prominence after speaking publicly about being diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay.

His journey into academia was widely presented as extraordinary, and his 2023 appointment at Cambridge was celebrated as an important moment for Black representation within Britain’s most prestigious academic institutions.

He previously held academic roles at the universities of Roehampton, Durham and Glasgow, and became known for his work on race, education, social inequality and neurodiversity.

His death brings a deeply tragic end to several weeks of fierce public debate about his work, achievements and personal history. While questions surrounding the allegations remained unresolved, the circumstances and cause of his death should not be subjected to speculation.

Arday is survived by his wife and two children. The Guardian⁠ reports that the police investigation is continuing and the matter will be referred to the coroner.
