“I Could Never Date a Fully Black Woman.” So Why Did She Say Yes?

Netflix’s latest Love Is Blind: Netherlands has sparked a heated debate about race, attraction and self-worth after contestant Jurriaan told Mika, a Black woman of Eritrean heritage, that he could not see himself falling for a fully Black woman.

The irony? He made the statement on a dating show built around the idea that love should transcend physical appearance.

During their conversations in the pods, Mika deliberately avoided revealing her surname because she feared it might give away her ethnicity. When she asked Jurriaan whether there was a particular type of woman he could never be attracted to, his response was that he wouldn't fall for a fully Black woman.

Mika challenged him, pointing out the contradiction between his statement and his earlier insistence that personality mattered more than appearance.

What makes the exchange particularly uncomfortable is that Mika later admitted she had experienced rejection because of her skin colour before. Yet, despite the hurtful conversation, she continued their relationship and eventually accepted his proposal.

The decision has divided viewers. Some question why a Black woman would pursue marriage with a man who openly expressed a racial preference that appeared to exclude her. Others argue that people can confront their prejudices, learn and change.

Mika has since defended her decision, explaining that their connection was deeper than the brief exchange viewers witnessed. Jurriaan has also publicly apologised, acknowledging that his comments were hurtful.

But beyond the reality television drama lies a much bigger conversation.

At what point does giving someone grace become negotiating your own worth? And can love really be blind when racial prejudice is already sitting in the room?

Perhaps the most interesting question isn't simply why he said it, but why she chose to stay.

What do you think? Could you marry someone who initially admitted that people who look like you were not their type?
