From everyday T-shirts and denim to discarded materials transformed into wearable art, the 2027 Met Gala promises a fresh perspective on fashion, creativity and the extraordinary possibilities of ordinary clothing.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially announced the theme for the 2027 Met Gala, “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” inviting fashion's biggest names to rethink the relationship between everyday clothing, craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Announced on Thursday, 5 November 2026, the theme will explore how seemingly ordinary garments and materials can become extraordinary through imagination, innovative construction and design.

Think everyday T-shirts, denim jeans, raincoats, sweatshirts and puffer jackets, reimagined into spectacular fashion statements. The exhibition will also examine how unconventional materials, including paper, plastic and metal, can be transformed into wearable works of art.

For decades, the Met Gala has been synonymous with extravagant couture, theatrical silhouettes and elaborate interpretations of fashion history. However, the 2027 theme proposes something rather different: finding beauty in the familiar.

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute's Curator in Charge, alongside Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, the exhibition will examine how designers elevate familiar garments while challenging conventional ideas about luxury, value and creativity.

It will explore two central concepts. The first focuses on the reinvention of wardrobe staples, from the humble white shirt to the everyday pair of jeans. The second examines how overlooked, discarded or inexpensive materials can be transformed into remarkable fashion creations.

The exhibition is also expected to feature works by designers including Charles James, Marc Jacobs, Junya Watanabe and Matthieu Blazy, highlighting the ways fashion has continually challenged the boundaries between practicality and artistic expression.

A New Direction Following the John Galliano Controversy

The announcement follows the cancellation of the Costume Institute's originally planned 2027 exhibition, John Galliano: Horizons, which was intended to celebrate the designer's influence on fashion.

The proposed retrospective attracted criticism over Galliano's history of racist and antisemitic remarks, prompting the designer and the museum to abandon the exhibition in August 2026.

The newly announced theme represents a significant departure from the original concept, shifting the focus from an individual designer's legacy to a broader exploration of fashion's relationship with everyday life.

For African designers, whose work frequently draws on traditional textiles, repurposed materials, craftsmanship and cultural storytelling, the theme presents an especially interesting opportunity to showcase how familiar objects and garments can carry extraordinary meaning.

It also opens a wider conversation about sustainability, consumption and fashion's longstanding obsession with novelty. At a time when the industry is increasingly being challenged to reconsider waste and overproduction, celebrating the creative possibilities of what already exists feels particularly relevant.

Ultimately, the theme asks a deceptively simple question: What makes something extraordinary? Is it the material itself, the craftsmanship behind it, or the imagination that transforms it?

The 2027 Met Gala will take place on Monday, 3 May 2027, while the accompanying exhibition will open to the public on 9 May 2027 and run until 9 January 2028. The official red-carpet dress code and celebrity co-chairs have yet to be announced.

One thing is certain: the 2027 Met Gala could challenge fashion's understanding of extravagance, proving that sometimes the most extraordinary ideas begin with the most ordinary things. And we cannot wait to see how designers interpret it.
