The Art of Taking Up Space: Orange Culture's Play on Volume, Colour and Individuality.

Bayo Oke-Lawal has never been one to play by fashion's conventional rules, and Orange Culture's latest Pre-Fall collection, presented at Lagos Fashion Week, was another reminder of the designer's appetite for experimentation, individuality and self-expression.

There was plenty to unpack, from the exaggerated proportions and oversized tailoring to the fluid silhouettes that moved effortlessly with the body. Structure played an interesting role throughout the collection. Broad shoulders, generous cuts and voluminous shapes created a commanding presence, yet there was a certain softness to the construction that prevented the clothes from appearing overly rigid. It was a clever interplay between form and freedom.

Colour, as expected, was anything but timid. Electric blues, fiery oranges, vibrant reds, greens and purples came together in combinations that were sometimes unexpected but undeniably expressive. The palette was energetic, almost rebellious, and contributed significantly to the collection's playful character.

Texture was another defining feature. Sculptural embellishments, tactile surfaces and dramatic detailing brought an almost theatrical quality to some of the looks. There were moments when the clothes appeared to transcend their practical function, becoming wearable expressions of art.

But perhaps what we found most interesting was the collection's refusal to subscribe to one rigid aesthetic. There were moments of contemporary chic, flashes of eccentricity, relaxed tailoring and unapologetic flamboyance. The collection moved between these expressions with a sense of creative freedom that has become synonymous with the Orange Culture identity.

Of course, with so many competing design elements, not every look delivered the same level of impact, and at times, the abundance of ideas challenged the overall cohesion of the collection. Yet there is something refreshing about a designer willing to take those risks rather than retreat into the safety of predictability.

Our verdict? Orange Culture's Pre-Fall collection was bold, expressive and delightfully unconventional. A celebration of colour, volume and the freedom to occupy space without apology.

And perhaps that is the point. Fashion doesn't always have to conform, flatter or even make perfect sense. Sometimes, it simply needs to make you feel something.
