That does not mean every parent who experiences postpartum depression or anxiety is dangerous. Far from it. Millions of women experience these conditions and never harm their children. Most recover with the right treatment and support.

But rare tragedies like this remind us that mental illness exists on a spectrum. At its most severe, it can have devastating consequences.

As this trial unfolds, the court will determine criminal responsibility. Beyond the legal questions, however, the case also raises broader issues about recognising severe maternal mental illness, ensuring timely access to specialist care, and understanding just how profoundly the brain can change when illness takes hold.
