TikTok Creator Sara Gilson Recreated the Viral "Netflix Documentary" Trend About Her Soon-to-Be Ex-Husband. Days Later, Police Say He Fatally Shot Her Before Taking His Own Life.

The death of Oklahoma hairstylist and TikTok creator Sara Gilson has reignited conversations about domestic violence, the limits of protective orders, and the devastating impact such tragedies have on children.

The online beauty community is mourning Gilson after she was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide involving her estranged husband, Jeremiah Shawn Duffy, who was known online as "Duff Daddy."

Before her death, Sara participated in the viral "Netflix documentary" trend on TikTok, using the format to tell the story of the breakdown of her marriage. In the videos, she alleged that her estranged husband had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct involving a teenage basketball player he coached, and that he had offered the teenager money to remain silent. Sara said discovering the alleged relationship prompted her to file for divorce. Those allegations gained widespread attention online but had not resulted in a criminal conviction at the time of the shooting.

According to police, the shooting took place in Owasso, Oklahoma, despite Sara having recently obtained a protective order against her estranged husband after alleging disturbing behaviour. Court records also indicate that she had previously sought a protective order against him in 2021, highlighting what many see as the limitations of protective orders in preventing domestic violence.

Authorities say the protective order was violated on the night of the shooting.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of the case is that one of the couple's children reportedly witnessed the shooting before running to a neighbour's home for help, prompting a 911 call. Police say Duffy later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Beyond social media, Sara had built a successful career as a hairstylist, entrepreneur and TikTok creator, cultivating a loyal following through beauty, fashion, clothing and jewellery content.

A GoFundMe campaign has since been established to help support her children with immediate needs, counselling, education and funeral expenses.

The tragedy has once again brought renewed attention to the dangers faced by victims of domestic abuse, even after seeking legal protection. It has also sparked wider conversations about whether existing legal safeguards are sufficient for victims who report escalating threats, and about the lasting trauma experienced by children who witness domestic violence.
