Belfast is Burning: Anti-Immigration Riots Erupt Following Knife Attack

Violent unrest has swept across Belfast after anti-immigration demonstrations escalated into riots following a knife attack allegedly carried out by an asylum seeker. Homes, businesses and vehicles have been targeted as tensions over immigration reach a boiling point.

Belfast has witnessed some of its worst scenes of civil unrest in recent years after anti-immigration protests descended into violence across several parts of the city.

The riots were sparked following a knife attack that left local man Stephen Ogilvie seriously injured. Police have since charged a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker with attempted murder. As details of the incident circulated online, anger quickly spilled onto the streets, drawing crowds of protesters and counter-protesters into confrontations that soon escalated beyond the control of organisers.

What began as demonstrations over public safety and immigration concerns rapidly transformed into widespread disorder. Vehicles were set ablaze, properties were attacked, and reports emerged of homes believed to belong to migrant families being deliberately targeted. Emergency services were deployed to multiple incidents as firefighters battled blazes and police worked to disperse crowds.

For many immigrant families living in affected areas, the violence has been terrifying. Some residents reportedly fled their homes amid fears of further attacks, while community organisations have called for increased protection for vulnerable groups caught in the unrest.

Political leaders across Northern Ireland have condemned both the knife attack and the retaliatory violence. Officials have urged residents to allow the justice system to deal with the criminal investigation rather than taking matters into their own hands.

The disturbances have reignited a heated debate about immigration, integration and public trust in institutions. While some protesters insist their demonstrations are driven by concerns about community safety, critics argue that far-right groups and anti-immigration activists have exploited the incident to fuel racial tensions and target innocent people.

As Belfast assesses the damage left behind, questions remain about how a single criminal act became the catalyst for city-wide unrest. The scenes unfolding across Northern Ireland's capital are a stark reminder of how quickly fear, anger and misinformation can combine to ignite violence.

For now, police remain on high alert as authorities work to restore order and prevent further escalation
