British-Nigerian photographer Amanda Akokhia has officially launched her debut coffee table book, “Recalibration”

British Nigerian photographer Amanda Akokhia has officially launched the presale of her debut coffee table book, Recalibration: A Light Index, a project six years in the making.

Through portraiture, lighting diagrams and visual essays, the book explores the evolution of photographic lighting on Black skin and the ways darker skin tones have historically been represented in image making. Blending art with research, Recalibration examines themes of visibility, perception and representation while celebrating the richness, depth and beauty of Black skin.

More than a collection of photographs, the book invites readers to think about the relationship between light and identity, and how something as technical as lighting can influence the way people are seen. It also serves as a celebration of Blackness, documenting skin tones with the care, nuance and attention they deserve.

The project arrives at a time when conversations around representation in photography, beauty and culture continue to grow, offering a thoughtful look at how light shapes the way people are seen and remembered.
