Cadavar Collagen? Women Are Injecting Collagen Harvested From Dead Bodies in the Pursuit of Youth

From South Korea to clinics across Asia, a controversial anti-ageing treatment made from donated human skin is rapidly gaining attention. Marketed as a regenerative alternative to traditional fillers, cadaver collagen injections promise firmer, smoother, more elastic skin-but they are also raising ethical, medical and cultural questions about how far people are willing to go in the pursuit of youth.


The global beauty industry has long pushed the boundaries of anti-ageing, from Botox and fillers to salmon DNA injections and exosome treatments. Now, another procedure is entering the spotlight-and it may be one of the most controversial yet.

Cadaver collagen injections, made from donated human tissue, are being promoted as the next generation of regenerative skin treatments, particularly in South Korea and parts of Southeast Asia.


Unlike conventional dermal fillers that primarily add volume, processed human dermal matrix (PHDM) is designed to provide a scaffold that encourages the body's own collagen production. Clinics claim the treatment improves skin elasticity, reduces fine lines, refines pores and restores a more youthful appearance by rebuilding the skin's extracellular matrix.


The material begins with donated skin from deceased individuals who have consented to tissue donation. During processing, all living cells and genetic material are removed, leaving behind structural proteins such as collagen and elastin. The tissue is then sterilised, purified and processed into injectable particles.

Supporters argue that because the donor cells and DNA are removed, the treatment is designed to minimise immune reactions while preserving the natural framework that supports skin regeneration.

One of the best-known products using this technology is Elravie Re20, which has gained popularity in South Korea's highly competitive aesthetics market.

However, despite the scientific processing involved, the treatment has sparked intense debate.

For many people, the idea of injecting a substance derived from deceased human donors is unsettling. Others question whether the cosmetic benefits justify using donated human tissue for aesthetic purposes when donor tissues are also needed for reconstructive and life-changing medical procedures.


Medical experts also stress that, as with any injectable treatment, there are potential risks, including infection, inflammation, allergic reactions and complications if administered improperly. Long-term data on widespread cosmetic use is still developing.


The rise of cadaver collagen injections reflects a broader shift within the beauty industry, where treatments increasingly focus on regeneration rather than simply filling wrinkles. But it also raises a bigger question: how far is society willing to go in the relentless pursuit of youth?

As aesthetic medicine continues to evolve, what once sounded like science fiction is rapidly becoming reality—and for some, injecting collagen derived from donated human tissue may be the next frontier in the billion-pound anti-ageing industry.
