EDITOR’S NOTE: THE GUTS TO BEGIN AGAIN

There is something Céline Dion’s story continues to reinforce about tribulation: sometimes winning is not defeating the thing that tried to break you. Sometimes winning is refusing to let it write the ending.

This weekend, Céline returned to a full concert stage in France for the first time in more than six years.

And the internet went ablaze.

There she was again - familiar songs belted from the belly of a woman who has been through an extraordinary battle with her own body. A body that, following her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome, threatened to take away the very things on which she had built one of the greatest careers in music: her movement, her stamina and, devastatingly, her voice.

But perhaps the most powerful thing about Céline's comeback is that she did not return pretending nothing had happened.

She returned changed.

There were tears. There was vulnerability. There were moments when you could hear that the journey had left its mark. But there was also that voice. That presence. That unmistakable Céline.

And guts.

So much guts.

Because resilience is often romanticised as bouncing back effortlessly. But real resilience can be much messier than that. It is rehabilitation. Repetition. Frustration. Starting again. Accepting what your body can no longer do while relentlessly working with what it still can. Then she walked onto that stage.

Not because the illness had magically disappeared. She walked onto it with it. And perhaps that is the lesson. Life will occasionally hand us something capable of completely rewriting the story we imagined for ourselves. Illness. Grief. Failure. Betrayal. Loss. Circumstances we cannot negotiate our way out of. We may never become the person we were before them.

But Céline Dion reminds us that becoming someone different does not necessarily mean becoming someone less. Sometimes the comeback isn't returning to who you were.It is having the guts to discover who you can still become.
