First Look: Children of Blood and Bone Brings Tomi Adeyemi's Epic Fantasy to Life

The first official images from Children of Blood and Bone have been released, giving audiences a first glimpse of the highly anticipated adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel.

Set in the mythical, West African-inspired kingdom of Orïsha, the story follows Zélie Adebola (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman determined to restore the magic stolen from her people by the ruthless King Saran. Alongside her brother Tzain (Tosin Cole), Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg), and Prince Inan (Damson Idris), she embarks on a dangerous journey to challenge oppression and reclaim her people's power.

The film features an all-star cast including:

Viola Davis as Mama Agba

Idris Elba as Lekan

Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran

Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea

Regina King as Queen Nehanda

Lashana Lynch as Jumoke

The supporting cast includes Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Saniyya Sidney, Bukky Bakray, Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Pamilerin Ayodeji, Temi Fagbenle, and Kola Bodunde.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film is scheduled for release in theatres and IMAX on 15 January 2027.

As for the Instagram comment asking, "Another Wakanda?"-while both are African-inspired fantasy worlds with Black-led casts, Children of Blood and Bone is its own original story. It is based on Tomi Adeyemi's novel, drawing heavily from Yoruba mythology, West African history, and the Òrìṣà spiritual tradition, whereas Black Panther is based on Marvel Comics and the fictional nation of Wakanda. The two may share visual and cultural influences, but they tell very different stories.
