For over three decades, Nigerian tennis fans scanning the main draws of Grand Slam tournaments have looked into a vacuum.
Then came 17-year-old Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin.
Known in tennis circles as "The Shark," the Aurum Tennis Academy prodigy has spent the summer of 2026 dismantling barriers. Fresh off a historic appearance at the Roland Garros Junior Championships in June, Ogunsakin arrived at the All England Club last week and did what no Nigerian singles player has accomplished since 1990: he qualified for the main draw of Wimbledon.

Ogunsakin had dropped four consecutive games, eventually conceding the match 7-5 in the decider against rated British contender, Oliver Page.
He shook off the dust from that, turning his focus to the Boys' Doubles event alongside Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin where they both secured spots in the Wimbledon Junior Doubles Round of 16.
Having already conquered the African Junior Regional Championships in Egypt earlier this year and broken the Grand Slam drought, the teenager has proved he belongs on the global tennis stage.
The singles match may have been lost, but Nigerian tennis has finally found its visual representation at the majors again. With the US Open qualifiers looming in August, The Shark is just getting started.
