Young Congolese Cyclist Miguel Masaisai Dies Mid-Trek
Miguel Masaisai, the 23-year-old cyclist and triathlete who set out to pedal across Africa to champion peace for his war-torn home country, has tragically died before completing his journey...
In a conflict that has spanned decades, over 100 armed groups operate in eastern Congo, fighting for territorial power and control over mineral wealth, including gold, tin, and coltan, a mineral used in modern electronics worldwide.
For youth in eastern DRC, opportunities are scarce. In the midst of this upheaval, Miguel Masaisai a youth from the Goma community in eastern Congo took it upon himself to create global awareness on the never-ending crisis. Masaisai wanted the world to see that his community is not just a passive victim of violence, but a home to resilient individuals who were just fighting for their peace.
Masaisai launched his initiative, Pedals for Peace, to shift the global narrative surrounding the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Armed with little more than his bicycle and a relentless drive, his goal was to demonstrate that young people from eastern Congo carry immense talent, grit, and hope not just the weight of war.
Masaisai was killed in a road accident near Ouesso in the northern Republic of the Congo.
Ironically, he was not on his saddle when the crash occurred; he was riding in a motor vehicle to get his bicycle mended when a heavy truck collided with the vehicle, cutting short a mission that had captured the hearts of thousands across the continent.
His latest quest was his most ambitious yet: a massive 14,000-kilometer (8,700-mile) trek across 17 nations, beginning on May 1 in his hometown of Goma and planned to end in Rabat, Morocco.
Before crossing into neighboring Republic of the Congo, Masaisai had already covered a 6,500-kilometer span across the width of the DRC. When he reached the capital city of Kinshasa, he was celebrated nationally for his extraordinary feat.
Long-distance endurance was nothing new to him; in a previous expedition, he cycled 6,000 kilometers from Goma all the way to Cape Town, South Africa, using every stop along the way to meet youth groups, visit schools, and preach continental solidarity. He had already amassed over 200 thousand followers since his quest began.
Though his wheels stopped turning far too soon, Miguel Masaisai's journey remains a powerful reminder of his poignant message:
"Use your talents to look for peace, not for war or violence".
