Ghent University Suspends Nathan Cofnas Following Public Backlash Surrounding The Late Jason Arday

Ghent University has officially suspended controversial American researcher Nathan Cofnas, following an intense public backlash after the tragic death of former Cambridge professor Jason Arday.

Cofnas, a postdoctoral researcher in Ghent’s Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences, confirmed the decision on social media, stating that he expects to be permanently dismissed by university officials.

The controversy began in late July 2026, when Cofnas published a detailed analysis on his Substack newsletter accusing Dr. Jason Arday of academic plagiarism. Arday, who made history in 2023 as the youngest Black person ever appointed to a professorship at the University of Cambridge, was celebrated globally for his research on race, inequality, and overcoming the challenges of a neurodivergent childhood.

Cofnas alleged that over 100 passages in Arday’s 2015 doctoral thesis and subsequent research papers were nearly identical to work published by other academics. Arday denied intentional academic fraud. However, he acknowledged citation errors, attributing them to inadequate supervision during his studies and his autism.

The exposure triggered widespread media interest and an official inquiry by Cambridge University into Arday's academic background. On August 5, 2026, Arday resigned from his post, stating that the "relentless accusations" had taken a profound toll on his well-being.

In an unexpectedly tragic turn of events, Arday was found dead at an address in South London. Police indicated the death was unexpected but not suspicious. His family and supporters released statements highlighting the "sustained abuse" and "campaign of harassment" Arday faced in the weeks leading up to his death.

Following the news, public scrutiny rapidly shifted to Cofnas. Student bodies, academic organizations, and online campaigns organized mass calls to Ghent University demanding his immediate termination.

In an official statement released by Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter and Vice-Rector Herwig Reynaert, the institution expressed deep shock over Arday’s passing and stated it was taking Cofnas’s recent public behavior "very seriously"

"Academic freedom is not unlimited and goes hand in hand with responsibility. The university is taking appropriate action within its powers and applicable frameworks regarding recent public statements."

Shortly after the announcement, Cofnas posted on X , confirming his suspension: “I was just suspended by Ghent University. They will almost certainly fire me.”

Ghent University’s formal disciplinary process remains confidential under personnel regulations, but university leadership has stated that a final decision on Cofnas’s employment will be passed after internal proceedings.
