‘My World Was Turned Upside Down’: BBC Radio 2 Legend Trevor Nelson Reveals Brain Tumor Diagnosis and Successful Surgery

Veteran broadcaster and British music icon Trevor Nelson in a deeply personal and profound reveal, recently shared that he underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour.

The 62-year-old DJ, who unexpectedly stepped away from his weekday BBC Radio 2 slot and Sunday show on Radio 1Xtra earlier this summer, broke his silence via an Instagram video.

Addresssing intense scrutiny regarding his health, Nelson reassured fans that he has "come out the other side" and is preparing to get back to work.

"A lot of you may have seen the post that I put up at the start of summer, saying that I was stepping back from all my work commitments due to illness," Nelson shared.

The broadcaster added that his phone had "blown up 20 times over" with loved ones and fans expressing concern. Feeling obligated to share the truth behind his sudden departure from the airwaves, he shared more details.

"I was minding my own business and then it was discovered that I had a brain tumour. As you can imagine, I was shocked. In fact, my world was turned upside down. It was a shock to myself, my close family, and friends. Quite literally, my head was all over the place."

"...I couldn't be that guy on the radio knowing I had that going on," he added.

Just a few weeks after receiving the initial results, Nelson underwent a major surgical procedure.

"Thankfully, it went incredibly well," he reassured listeners. Over the past month, the Radio 2 host has been recovering at home, receiving post-operative care, and taking time out to focus on resting, spending time with family, hitting the gym, and watching football.

Despite the weight of the surgery, Nelson says his energy levels have bounced back.

"I can only tell you the truth, and the truth is, I feel great right now. I feel energised and almost back to myself. I've had a really serious situation, but I've come out the other side at this point. I feel raring to go."

There's been a notable outpouring of support for the much-loved DJ since the announcement, with a lot of fans and industry peers wishing him quick recovery and sending notes and messages of positivity and well wishes.

A cornerstone of British urban and R&B broadcasting for over three decades, Nelson's career spans landmark tenures at Kiss FM, MTV, BBC Radio 1, and BBC Radio 2. DJ Spoony has been covering his popular afternoon slot on Radio 2 during his medical leave.

While he promised fans a deeper dive into "the whole crazy story" when he is fully ready, Nelson confirmed his airwave comeback is imminent.

"You will be hearing me on the radio very, very soon," he promised, adding that live DJ gigs will follow shortly after.
